Blue is the colour that created the rare-colour market in French Bulldogs, and it remains the most widely produced non-standard coat.
The genetics
Dilution is caused by a recessive allele at the MLPH gene. Two copies — d/d — cause melanin granules to clump rather than distribute evenly, which reads visually as grey rather than black. It affects skin pigment too, which is why blue dogs have grey noses and eye rims rather than black.
The risk you are buying
That same melanin clumping physically distorts the developing hair shaft. In some diluted dogs this causes colour dilution alopecia — brittle hairs that fracture, follicles that become inflamed, and progressive permanent hair loss over the diluted areas. There is no cure.
Not every blue dog is affected, and many keep an acceptable coat for life. But the risk exists only in diluted dogs, it cannot be screened out other than by avoiding the genotype, and an increasing number of UK insurers now recognise this at underwriting with a premium loading or an outright exclusion.
The honest summary
You pay roughly double to triple the price of a brindle, you cannot register the dog with the Kennel Club as a recognised colour, you accept a specific dermatological risk, and you may pay more for insurance. The dog is not otherwise different in temperament or structure.

Are blue French Bulldogs unhealthy?

Can blue French Bulldogs be Kennel Club registered?
