This is where the market for 'rare' colours meets its bill. The blue, lilac, isabella and platinum coats commanding five-figure prices are all produced by the same dilution genotype, and colour dilution alopecia is a direct consequence of that genotype.
The genetics, briefly
Dilution is caused by a recessive allele at the MLPH locus. A dog needs two copies — d/d — to display a diluted coat. That same double dose causes melanin granules to clump abnormally inside the developing hair. The clumps physically distort the hair shaft, which becomes brittle and fractures, and they can damage the follicle itself.
Not every blue dog is affected
Worth being accurate here: carrying d/d makes a dog susceptible, not certain to be affected. Plenty of blue French Bulldogs keep a reasonable coat for life. But the risk exists only in diluted dogs, it is not screenable other than by avoiding the genotype, and there is no cure — only lifelong management of a coat that will not recover.
What this should mean for a buyer
You are being asked to pay a substantial premium for a colour whose genetic basis carries a specific dermatological risk, which several insurers now load or exclude for. That is a poor trade on any rational reading, and it is worth sitting with before paying five figures for a lilac puppy.

- Gradual thinning of the coat over the diluted-coloured areas
- Dry, dull, brittle coat
- Broken hairs and a moth-eaten appearance
- Recurrent bacterial folliculitis with small crusts and spots
- Scaling skin
- Areas of complete permanent hair loss

How it is diagnosed
Trichogram — microscopic hair examination — shows characteristic melanin clumping. Skin biopsy confirms. DNA testing establishes the dilution genotype.

- DNA test breeding stock for the dilution allele
- Recognise that blue and lilac French Bulldogs are, by definition, d/d and therefore at risk
Insurance: Explicitly hereditary, and many policies exclude hereditary conditions in dogs of a colour known to carry the risk. Some insurers now apply a colour-based loading or exclusion at underwriting for blue and lilac French Bulldogs specifically.
