French Bulldog lifetime cost & insurance calculator
Most cost guides quote a purchase price and a food bill. This works out the number that actually matters: the risk-adjusted veterinary spend across your dog's life, weighted by how likely each condition is, adjusted for where you live — and how much of it your insurance would refuse to pay.
How to read the results
Risk-adjusted vet spend is not a prediction of your bill. It is the sum of each condition's typical cost multiplied by its likelihood — what the risk is worth. Your actual dog will either need BOAS surgery or it will not; the model tells you what that coin flip is worth in pounds, which is the correct basis for deciding how much cover to buy.
Exposure outside cover is usually the most important figure on the page. Insurers exclude anything already on the clinical record, and they interpret that broadly. A note reading "slight nasal stenosis, monitor" at a puppy vaccination is enough to decline a BOAS claim three years later. If that number is large, it is large because of decisions already made — which is why we say so persistently that the policy should start before the first vet visit.
Total premiums to age 10 often surprises people. Premiums for this breed rise steeply with age, so the figure is not the current monthly cost multiplied by ten — it is a year-by-year sum with the age loading applied at each step.
What the model is built from
Eight conditions are modelled, each with a lifetime incidence and a typical UK cost range: BOAS surgery, IVDD treatment, skin fold dermatitis, chronic allergy management, cherry eye and entropion correction, caesarean section, patellar luxation and hemivertebrae. Regional weighting is applied to both premium and treatment cost, though treatment costs vary less sharply than premiums do.
The same numbers drive the cost pages and the health condition pages, so nothing on this site can quietly disagree with anything else on it. Every figure's source and verification date is published on where our figures come from — including an honest list of the ones that are still estimates, and why.

Lifetime cover with per-condition limits that hold up against a single IVDD surgical episode. Compare the per-condition limit rather than the headline annual figure.
Best for:Owners insuring from the day of collection
Check current priceLifetime policy with straightforward wording and no age cap on renewal, which matters for a breed whose costs accelerate in later life.
Best for:Owners who value clear policy wording over the lowest headline premium
Check current priceLong-established lifetime product with high per-condition limits. Generally more expensive, and generally less inclined to dispute large orthopaedic and neurological claims.
Best for:Owners prioritising claim reliability over price
Check current priceLifetime cover with generous limits, and free four-week cover frequently offered through breeders at the point of collection — which is exactly the moment to start a policy.

Common questions
How does this calculator work?
It takes each major French Bulldog health condition, multiplies its lifetime likelihood by its typical UK treatment cost, and adjusts both for your region. Anything you mark as already diagnosed is moved out of the insured column, because insurers exclude pre-existing conditions. The result is a risk-adjusted projection rather than a prediction of your specific bill.
Why does my postcode change the premium so much?
Insurers price against local veterinary fees, which vary enormously across the UK. London premiums run roughly 40% above the national average, while Northern Ireland sits around 15% below. Over a dog's lifetime that difference is worth thousands of pounds.
Why does colour affect the figures?
An increasing number of UK insurers apply a loading to diluted coats — blue, lilac, isabella and platinum — because of the association with colour dilution alopecia. Some exclude that condition outright at underwriting. The calculator applies a loading to reflect this.
What does "exposure outside cover" mean?
It is the risk-weighted cost of conditions already on your dog's clinical record. Insurers treat those as pre-existing and exclude them, so that expected cost falls on you rather than on the policy. It is usually the most important number on this page.
Are these figures guaranteed?
No. They are modelled estimates built from typical UK veterinary pricing and published incidence data for the breed, adjusted regionally. Always obtain a written quote for your specific dog. Treat this as a way to understand the shape of the risk, not as a quotation.
